10% Discount off Workshops

As many people were unable to attend the Christmas Craft Fair last Saturday due to illness and prior engagements, we are extending the 10% discount off the price of any workshop if booked before the 31st December. A £20 deposit will be required at the time of booking. Please view the workshop programme and details and contact us if you wish to make a booking. Merry Christmas!

Show Success

A lady that recently attended one of the workshops here at Cartwheels suggested that I enter some of my work into the handicraft section at the ‘Liskeard and District Prime Stock Show’.  I have never entered any of my work into any competitions before but I decided to have a go.

I entered three classes within the handicraft section, ‘A framed item of cross stitch’, ‘A machine made article’, and ‘Any handicraft other than the other classes’.  The items I entered were a framed cross stitch picture of wild flowers, a quilted play mat I made for my little boy and a shaggy rag cushion that I recently made in one of the workshops here at Cartwheels.

To my amazement I won a first for my cushion and a third for my cross stitch.  Not only that, but I won ‘The Perpetual Handicraft Cup’ for the exhibitor gaining most points in the handicraft section.  What a complete surprise!  There is no stopping me now, I am on the lookout for the next competition.

If any one likes the shaggy rag cushion, we will be holding another workshop here at Cartwheels on the 8th March 2014.

Julia Terry – The Felted Sheep

Julia is a Florist by trade and has always enjoyed crafts while experimenting with many different types.  In 2006, Julia was at a craft trade fair and came across needle felting.  She loved the idea of working with wool and could see how versatile the craft could be.  Julia is always happy when she is creating and she has plenty of ideas!

Sue Rowe

Sue began her patchwork hobby at the age of 5 when her gran taught her the basic techniques. Her hobby then gradually developed to include quilting and in 2011 she decided to make her hobby into a business of her own.  She opened a tea room / craft room at her home where she made and sold cushions, bags, aprons, fabrics, buttons and much more.  In March 2015, Sue transferred her business over to Cartwheels and merged with Julia to open Cartwheels Shop to compliment Cartwheels Craft Centre where Sue also teaches workshops and runs sewing groups.  Together, Sue and Julia are able to hold a larger amount of stock, a wider range of fabrics, threads, wadding and much more.  Sue’s work is a combination of hand-stitching and machine work which has been inspired by her rural life and the countryside surrounding her home.

Own Project Day

In January 2014 we will be starting ‘Own Project Days’ where you can come and work on an existing project or a new idea that you haven’t yet started.  It can be sewing, knitting, rag rugging, drawing, painting, willow or any other kind of art or craft project.  There will not be any tutors on site, just like minded people working on their own projects and exchanging ideas.  You can stay for half or the whole day but it would be advisable to book in advance as spaces will be limited.

These will be run quarterly on the last Saturday of the month (January, April, July and October)

Shaggy Rag Rugs with Sara Rose

11 ladies came to Cartwheels Craft Centre on Saturday to a Shaggy Rag Rug workshop held by Sara Rose.  It was a great day (although my progress was a bit slow), some were more ambitious than me and went straight for a square or heart design, whereas I went for the random design!  A couple of ladies almost finished their designs on the day, well done.

If you feel inspired by these pictures and would like to have a go, we will be holding another workshop in early 2014.

I have now finished my Shaggy Rag cushion that I started during the workshop, I am really quite pleased with it as it was my first attempt!  I hope you like it too!
